May be able to obtain one via barter. New struts, airbag light on...otherwise clean condition, straight, good tires with some new leather for the front seats. It’s the 2.6. I figure the cash in pocket difference is $1200. I’d put my son in it.

What say you Oppo? Brown? Check. Wagon? Check. Potential Moose Badge? Of Course! Future Oppo? Hopefully!

Don’t even ask, just get it. Nobody on here is going to say not to.

We support you in your questionable vehicular decisions!

I had a 2001 Cross Country. Great rig, and very comfortable. Only repair I needed  with it as the passenger side half shaft. I bought a rebuilt and installed it at home for about $200.

is the Volvo even called Allroad? He said it earlier and I never thought about it. Sounds like it could  be?

Well for starters, it’s not an Allroad or a v70. It’s a Cross Country, and if it’s a 2004, it’s an XC70 (Volvo switched from V70 XC to XC70 in 2003). Also I don’t think there was a 2.6? My understanding was that all XC70s in the US got the 2.5T (makes ~210hp). S60/V70s had a few other engine options, but I think even there they were 2.4/2.5s.

I’ve got a 2006 S60 which is related. In any event, you are looking at something that should be safe, and probably average reliability, though above average repair costs if something goes wrong. Master Volvo mechanic EL_ULY said to watch out for the rubber bits, as they don’t always hold up well (though that might be specific to the Texas heat). When I’ve driven the XC70, it feels bigger than I’d like (as does my S60), but that’s probably mostly just a sign that I drove a small car for 13+ years. Famously comfortable seats.

I had a coworker with a C70 that got caught in a flash flood on his street, so he gave me the Propus C’s for the wagon.

I didn’t even look it up...worked 58 hours the last 4 days and came home and thought I’d let Oppo be my guide!

Thanks for the info, average reliability is all one can ask So long as it’s not a CEL nightmare like VW.

It isn't. Volvo wagons are either no-name or Cross Country.

Volvo used this engine in nearly everything, and I haven’t heard too much bad about it (unlike some of their others). My sense is that the transmission is not as solid as the engine, but probably still around average. Keep in mind that it’s a timing belt engine. At 15 years I’d guess it’s already been done (interval is like 10 years 105,000 miles, though there are some state-specific models that have 12/120,000 or 15/150,000 intervals), but if it hasn’t, then it really needs it, and for my S60, it was around $800 to have it done (which seems like a lot for a t-belt, but I did check several places).

One of my best friends in college had this generation of XC70. It served him well on road trips for a good six years, including many adventures on forest service/BLM roads until he sold it to buy a full-size Ford van.

Get it!

Local repair guy known for understanding volvos would bring us his alignments. Always loved to talk about the cool stuff. When asked about finding a good one he said to check the bushings, he would just press new ones in with his snap-on socket set, and watch for overheating. Supposedly, based on what he said the ac condensor radiator and intercooler are sandwhiched together and the flap/cover can allow an accumulation of stuffs to block flow. The repair was to pull the sandwich out and thoroughly clean, then reinstall. Oh, and xc90's sunroof rains clog and flood between the floor pans and the cowl firewall area can soak the main computer through the harness connector. Otherwise he thought volvos  were great.
